Description
The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (JCC) offers the first and only veterinary degree in Hong Kong, and the only programme accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and Australasian Veterinary Boards Council in Asia. The JCC has a small purpose-built dairy farm housing Jersey cattle, and a beef herd, used for training Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) students.
This position is suitable for a veterinarian with dairy cattle experience. The appointee will oversee the health of cattle in our dairy and beef herds. He/She will be responsible for the provision of preventive veterinary health programme and veterinary services, and will participate in practical training of BVM students in cattle-handling, production and preventive health. The appointee will also support the Farm Manager in overseeing the CityUHK Farm.
Duties :
The appointee will be required to:
- Provide veterinary care and services to the Dairy Herd, including but not limited to, preventive care (vaccination, nutrition, hoof trimming), treatment of disease, and participation in the after-hours on-call roster for provision of emergency veterinary care;
- Assist the Farm Manager in overseeing farm operations and in quality assurance mechanisms of the farm, e.g. preparation/implementation of standard operating procedures, preparation for farm inspections, provision of farm tours;
- Teach and supervise students on-farm and liaise with academic farm animal teaching staff during extra-mural studies, rotations and practicals;
- Coordinate with the Farm Manager and colleagues during training and working;
- Assist the Farm Manager to co-ordinate with outside contractors and suppliers, including planning of feed and other resources;
- Lead the team and oversee the farm, including out of hours for periods when the Farm Manager is on leave; and
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Shift duty during irregular hours and working on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays will be required.
Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from an institution recognised by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong (VSB) that will enable registration with the VSB; experience and competence in cattle practice or mixed-animal practice, including basic surgeries (e.g., LDA surgery); ability to work independently and manage after-hours emergencies; excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills; ability to lead small teams and motivate others; interest in teaching are required. Ability to speak Cantonese or Putonghua is beneficial but not essential.
Salary and Conditions of Service
Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
