Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling more than 26,000 students at its three campuses in Selden, Brentwood, and Riverhead, as well as its Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead. Announcement is hereby made for a full-time (10-month) Professional Assistant in the Department of Health Sciences/Veterinary Science beginning immediately at the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood, NY.
This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the college.
Responsibilities include:
ANIMAL CARE
Co-Manager of Animal Care Facility
Dispense medications as per recommendations of the attending veterinarian
Maintain records on the feeding and health of the laboratory animals
Monitor feed and bedding supplies
Maintain the facility according to the guidelines set by the USDA, NYSDOH, IACUC
Prepare the facility for USDA, NYSDOH and AVMA inspections
Assist students with the care and testing of their individual animals for class
LABORATORY CLASS SESSIONS
Set up and break down of labs
Prepare equipment for labs and ensure equipment is ready and functioning
Provide and perform periodic maintenance exams on all required equipment and devices used within the program
Assist and work with instructors throughout the laboratory sessions
Create and coordinate the surgery schedule
Coordinate adjunct PA’s
Maintain a classroom at Suffolk County Farm
SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT
Responsible for managing the inventory and ordering of supplies and essentials needed for class instruction
Maintain controlled drug inventories and log books.
Replace equipment as it becomes “dated” and as funding is available
Ensure disposal and storage of regulated waste
Notify Plant Operations of surgery schedules and plan fire inspections
Serve as the liaison with all entities that we have MOU’s with (i.e. Cornell Cooperative Extension, Pal O Mine, etc.)
Prepare work orders for Paumanok Hall facility maintenance as needed and per IACUC inspections
Provide technical assistance in VST laboratories, including the preparation and disassembling of instructional supplies and equipment for the full complement of VST courses
Promote compliance with standards and regulations of various federal, national, state, and local agencies, including the USDA, NYSDOH, and AVMA
Provide instructional assistance to students who are implementing practical tasks, both in and out of the laboratory classroom, including the documentation of the successful performance by students of AVMA’s essential tasks
Participate in assorted departmental, campus, and college activities, including the AVMA self-study and the college program-review process
Develop and maintain files appropriate to the position’s responsibilities
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
An Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology
Five (5) years of experience in Veterinary Technology
Licensed Veterinary Technician in the State of New York
Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science
